Injured soldiers rehab at Calabogie ski hill
CBC News Ottawa
- Posted February 15, 2012

The Calabogie Peaks ski resort is playing host this week to a group of Canadian soldiers working to keep physical while they recover from serious injuries.

Corporal Dale Cross, from Smiths Falls, Ont., lost his left foot and part of his left leg 18 months ago after he stepped on an explosive device in Afghanistan. He said he handled it better than those providing him care.

"It didn't bother me," said Cross. "I was quite happy to be laying there alive because I got a wife and kids." On Wednesday, Cross was one of 10 soldiers participating in the Canadian Force's Soldier On ski program, which aims to help injured military personnel stay active and healthy.

As part of the program, Cross tried out the sit ski, a device that allows people with some physical disabilities to enjoy the sport. And he confused hill staff when, during a run, the call went out to retrieve a ski, a boot and a leg — after his prosthesis slipped off while he was riding on the chair...Read more and view video by clicking here.

It was a long-distance passion, but that didn't stop Harold Murphy. Nearly every weekend during the ski season, Harold would make the 4 1/2-hour drive from Toronto, where he practised law, to Calabogie as he set about transforming a small, financially troubled ski hill into the fourseason resort it is today.

"He had his heart and soul in this place," says Harold's 56-yearold son, Paul, who took over as president of Calabogie Peaks in 2009. Harold Murphy died Nov. 30 at age 83.....read more.

BRACEBRIDGE — The Canadian Snowcross Racing Association (CSRA) season is off and running.

The first official points race of the season happened the weekend of Dec. 3 in Calabogie. There’s already a wealth of Bracebridge names rising to the top of the 11-race series and family-friendly rivalries are taking shape. Heavy rains in the Ottawa region the day before the races began forced the Calabogie hosts to shorten the track, using fake snow for the base. It made some of the weekend-long conditions tough for racers, with a shorter, challenging course with steep jumps and deeper pits than usual. First-time competitive racer, 17-year-old Bracebridge and Muskoka Lakes Secondary School student Mitch McNair explained organizers did an excellent job creating the track’s base. A longtime sledder, but rookie racer, Mitch and his older brother, Steven, 19, are both making their first foray into the competitive world of snowcross racing. Both did well in their season opener...read more.

The CSRA Canadian Snocross season opener at Calabogie Peaks Resort outside of Ottawa was a little light on the snow side, but the rain that hit the Ottawa area bypassed Calabogie. Although muddy and gravely conditions were the operative words as the weekend progressed.

Team Rockstar Energy Polaris Racing was in full force at Round 1 with defending Pro Open Champion Iain Hayden, his teammate No.3 ranked Lee Butler, and their protégée, JB Dennis, who is campaigning the Pro Lite Open and Stock class.

Despite being roughed up in a crash one week earlier in Duluth, Minn., Hayden showed no indication that he wasn't feeling 100% at Calabogie. The Espanola, Ont. native totally dominated the Pro Open Invitational Dash For Cash on Saturday.

The four-time champ shot out of the gate on his Polaris IQ 600 racing sled, unleashing its awesome power to snare the holeshot and then put on a clinic all the way to the finish line...read more.

Next weekend Calabogie Peaks will be hosting the first race of the season for the Canadian Snowcross Racing Association.

Riding on the success of last year's event, the organization has made Calabogie Peaks the official home for the Capital Cup Snowcross Championships, the first in a series of 11 races held in Ontario and Quebec during the winter months.

"The Canadian Snowcross Racing promotes Canada's largest snowmobile racing series, the Canadian National Snowcross Championships," explains Nicole Wilson, spokesperson for the resort. "Their events feature over 40 classes of competition including classes for kids as young as four years of age."

Wilson advises spectators will be treated to the thrill of the race as they watch high performance snow machines compete on a snow track consisting of tight turns, banked corners, steep jumps and obstacles...read more.

Snow time like now - by Steve Newman

No snow, no problem ... maybe. Evening temperatures of -6 C or colder will allow Calabogie Peaks Resort to make enough snow to host the second annual Capital Cup on the Canadian Snowcross Racing Association (CSRA) circuit.

Owner Paul Murphy recognizes that early-season conditions aren’t always wrapped in certainty. But he says suitably cold evening temperatures and an expanded fleet of expensive fan guns will be making snow at a feverish pace this month, in anticipation of the arrival of a few hundred snowcross competitors from the United States, Ontario and Quebec.

The first stop on last year’s series was a big success, with combined crowds of over 2,500 for the two days last December. Expectations are for bigger crowds this time, for the Dec. 3 and 4 event.

“It’s not just good, it’s fabulous, to pull off an event like this at the beginning of the season,” CSRA president Ken Avann told The Mercury last season. Murphy says even more equipment is in place this season to make the Capital Cup a secondtime reality. The Peaks now has 23 high-technology fan guns, including several that are mounted on towers two to six metres above ground and others that are portable. Tower-mounted guns also produce more snow than ground models because of the additional hang time for water particles to freeze before they hit the ground...read more.
